French Country Waterways slashes fares by a third

The luxury barge cruise line French Country Waterways has increased discounts on its October 21 and 28, 2007, voyages in Alsace-Lorraine, Burgundy, Champagne, and the Upper Loire Valley.

All-inclusive six-night cruises on five eight- to 18-passengers barges, which originally cost $4,895 to $5,995 per person, double occupancy, have now been slashed nearly 30 percent to $3,495 to $4,595. This is value season in France, but the fall weather in late October is often beautiful (no guarantees, of course).

Picture yourself plying tree-lined canals on a slow journey through the French countryside, dotted with medieval villages, fields, and vineyards, and with daily excursions into historic cities and towns, all included in the price. The cuisine and wines aboard (also included) are first rate, and French, of course. If this picture appeals to you, a barge trip may be for you.
